Tools & Techniques

There are numerous tools and techniques available to therapists and their clients.

Here is a selection of a few that I work with. Often a client will have an idea of what will work best for them.

PSYCHOEDUCATION

If we have a physical injury, we may ask how did that happen? how are we to look after it, what dressings or creams do we need to apply? will this get better, will there be a scar? So, why can the same curiosity not be applied to the injuries and pains that cannot be seen?
Psychoeducation is all about curiosity. The client may not have the answers and will look to the Therapist. The Therapist may not have the answers, but let’s look at the possible causes together.
Sometimes we will find the answer, sometimes not, but we will gain knowledge, self-awareness and understanding that will help to identify coping skills, management strategies and make positive steps towards a sustainable change.

EFT (EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES)

EFT is often referred to as ‘tapping’.
It is a body and mind self-help method, combining gentle tapping together with mindful and vocal attention to thoughts and feelings. We tap with our fingertips on acupuncture points on the hands, face and body while focusing upon an issue we wish to resolve.
EFT is often used to change negative feelings, reduce distressing and/or self-limiting thoughts, to alter repetitive unwanted behaviours and is even effective for working with and resolving traumatic memories.
EFT is gentle and can do no harm. It reduces strong emotions or feelings of discomfort or pain, sometimes within seconds. It is a tool that you can use anywhere and at any time and once learnt, you do not need a therapist to show or guide you.

IET (INTEGRATED ENERGY THERAPY)

One of the premises of IET is that ‘Mind expresses itself through the body in language and behaviour’.
This presupposes that we have a conscious and an unconscious mind.
The conscious mind is good at reviewing our experiences, blocking out all but relevant data and making deliberate choices.
The unconscious mind is good at absorbing large amounts of information from the outside world and aligning information to agree with the conscious mind.
Sometimes the ‘alignment’ is difficult, or in conflict with the conscious mind and this is shown in our feelings and emotions, which are stored within the body, much like facts are stored within the brain
The techniques offered by IET are a safe and gentle way to help identify and understand these difficulties or conflicts and release us from past thought or behavioural patterns.
IET helps to relax the body and focus the mind. It involves vision work that helps reduce stress and anxiety and is particularly useful for addressing deeper emotional or mental issues.

HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy is a way to relax you, whilst you remain fully aware and in control of your body and mind. It is a way of communicating with the subconscious part of the mind, to make changes to thought processes and / or behaviours.
You will be led into a deeply relaxed state, whilst listening to the therapist’s voice, language, and suggestions. You have the choice to take on suggestions and if necessary, you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.
It is a very gentle technique that will help you to make changes and will leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed..

I understand that you are feeling anxious, worried, stressed, or at a loss as to how to feel better?

Addictive behaviours were once or may even still be rewarding in some way, but we can no longer control them. Despite knowing that it is detrimental or harmful, we have a compelling incentive to continue.

Addiction is complex and often hidden, which makes talking about it so difficult, but understanding why the behaviour started in the first place is where we will start.

Maybe you feel that you need support in finding ways to make changes and move towards a happier future?
